Dr Chris Bremer has taken charge of Neurizon Therapeutics as the Melbourne company counts down to a critical trial result.
Sergio Duchini, who had led the company as interim executive chairman, moves to non-executive chairman.
The company's lead drug, NUZ-001, is in the registrational Phase 2/3 HEALEY ALS Platform Trial for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the most common form of motor neurone disease. Enrolment in the trial's Regimen I finished in July, with 250 participants across 78 clinical sites in the United States. Topline results are expected in late June 2027.
Dr Bremer said he was taking over at a pivotal moment. "I am delighted to formally commence as CEO of Neurizon at an important point in the Company's development. Neurizon has established a strong foundation around NUZ-001, with an advanced clinical program and an international network spanning clinical development, regulatory, manufacturing and scientific capabilities," he said.
"My immediate priority is disciplined execution as Regimen I progresses towards topline results. At the same time, we need to ensure that Neurizon is prepared to respond to the potential regulatory, development and strategic pathways that may emerge from the data."
He has more than 20 years of international experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. About 20 of those years were at the German drugmaker GrĂ¼nenthal, where his senior global roles included Executive Vice President, Early Products and Commercial Opportunities and Interim Chief Commercial Officer. Over his career, he has assessed early-stage assets, shaped portfolio strategy and closed more than US$1 billion in licensing deals.
Alongside its trial work, the company is building its manufacturing, partnering and commercial capacity, though it says any next step depends on the clinical data.
"Having spent much of my career connecting scientific and clinical development with portfolio strategy, commercialisation and strategic partnerships, I see significant value in bringing those disciplines together as Neurizon enters this next phase," Dr Bremer said.
"I look forward to working with the Neurizon team and the Board, and engaging with our clinical collaborators, partners, shareholders and the ALS/MND community as we continue to advance NUZ-001."
Mr Duchini said the new chief executive was inheriting a company in sound shape. "On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to formally welcome Chris as Chief Executive Officer. Chris takes the leadership of Neurizon at an important stage, with enrolment in Regimen I complete, NIH-funded Expanded Access Program established, and the Company fully funded through the HEALEY readout and completion of the study. Our focus is now on maintaining disciplined execution while ensuring Neurizon is strategically prepared for the opportunities that may follow," he said.
"Over the past several months, the Neurizon team has delivered a number of important clinical, funding and corporate milestones. I am incredibly proud of what the team has achieved and grateful for their commitment during my time as Interim Executive Chairman.
"Chris brings a highly complementary combination of scientific, commercial and transactional experience, and I look forward to working closely with him as Chairman to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the momentum the Company has built."
