Moderna has welcomed the Albanese Government's National Science Statement and its prioritisation of support for advanced manufacturing, sovereign capability, and innovative sciences.

Industry Minister Ed Husic said, “Great ideas of our scientists and researchers lead to great products and great jobs.

“We want science to drive industry growth, creating stronger businesses and more secure, well-paid jobs for Australians."

Moderna said it welcomes the statement's focus on the crucial role of science, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to maintain sovereign capabilities in critical areas.

“We are encouraged by the focus on creating new industries through an effective R&D system and maximising the return on investment in scientific research. The government’s strategic investments in science infrastructure and support for commercialising scientific discoveries will enhance Australia’s position as a global leader in science and technology,” said Michael Azrak, Moderna’s general manager for Australia and New Zealand.

“The imminent completion of our mRNA vaccines manufacturing site in Clayton, Melbourne, and the upcoming supply of our first locally-manufactured products underscore our commitment to Australia’s scientific and industrial capabilities.

“We also welcome the emphasis on a diverse, skilled workforce and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems. Embracing diverse perspectives is vital for driving innovation and achieving scientific breakthroughs,” he added.

Moderna established the Regional Research Centre in Melbourne in 2023. It is a unique collaboration model that aims to share knowledge and upskill new workforces, enable original research to impact unmet medical needs, and foster productive partnerships that collectively pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in mRNA science.
