Large-scale medical product manufacturers in Australia are being invited to apply for Federal funding through its 'Manufacturing Collaboration' stream under the Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI). Co-funded grants from $20 million to $200 million are available, from a total funding pool of $800 million.
The funding aims to support long-term transformation creation, and projects are being sought that feature, or will create and facilitate, business-to-business or business-to-research collaboration at their core.
Applications are invited from companies, including those:
- with a minimum of $60.6 million in eligible project expenditure;
- where no more than 50% of your project is funded from Commonwealth funding sources;
- where no more than 65% of your project is funded from all government sources (including Commonwealth, State and Territory and local); and,
- where your project shows the potential to expand or promote interstate or international trade.
AusBiotech CEO, Lorraine Chiroiu, said, “The support through MMI continues to signify the Government’s endorsement of the potential of the Australian biotechnology industry. Our companies need a supportive system throughout the entire pipeline in order to commercialise, manufacture and deliver new technologies for patients in Australia and across the globe. Supporting Australia’s medical product manufacturing means supporting biotech’s innovative industry, its research expertise, and its highly-skilled workforce. It is a ‘salute’ to the impact that Australian biotechnology has in improving health and wellbeing, and for Australia’s economy.”
The Government’s objectives for this funding is to increase investment in Australian manufacturing, particularly in high value-added activities; increase manufacturing capability, business acumen, knowledge diffusion and expertise; support long-term job creation and a more highly skilled workforce in the Australian manufacturing sector and to foster collaboration.
The Manufacturing Collaboration stream is an aspect of the Modern Manufacturing Initiative, part of the Australian Government’s Modern Manufacturing Strategy announced during the October 2020 Federal Budget, that will invest a total of $1.3 billion over five years and across six priority areas, including medical products. This stream is independent of the Translation and Integration funding streams that were opened in May 2021.
Interested companies can begin preparing their application using the sample application form available on the Government portal website, and can lodge complete submissions between 11 August 2021 and 9 September 2021.
