Six AusBiotech members have been included in a list of Australia's Top 100 manufacturers compiled by IBISWorld.
CSL was the top biotechnology company, ranked 12th, followed by Johnson & Johnson (48), GSK (50), Pfizer (54), AstraZeneca (69), Cochlear (83) and MSD (84).
Several other pharmaceutical and medical technology companies were also included in the list, including ResMed (57), Aspen (81), Bayer (89) and Roche (90).
AusBiotech has been a consistent advocate of policies to support advanced manufacturing.
"There is substantial opportunity for establishment, retention and growth of advanced manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and growing niche areas like cell manufacturing," it said in a recent submission to the Victorian Government’s Future Industries Discussion Paper on the future of ‘Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals’.
Amongst a range of proposals, AusBiotech argues government should consider introducing tax-based incentive to encourage companies to invest in local manufacturing of patented Australian intellectual property.
