The AusBiotech 2024 Conference, designed by industry for industry, is set to deliver its largest programme yet in the organisation's 38-year history over an exciting four-day programme. 

Commencing Tuesday, 29 October, until Friday, 1 November, with over 260 speakers confirmed and more than 60 concurrent sessions. 

AusBiotech 2024 Conference will offer valuable opportunities for attendees from the entire life sciences ecosystem – and beyond – to tune into industry-leading conversations focused on advancing our thriving sector. The four-day programme is one of the most pre-eminent biotechnology industry conferences in the Asia-Pacific region.

Highlight keynotes and panel sessions at the AusBiotech 2024 Conference:

  • Opening address from The Hon. Mark Butler MP, Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care.
  • Opening address from The Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP, Victorian Minister for Jobs and Industry.
  • Millis Oration: The medical moonshot; Dr Daniel Timms, Founder & Chief Technical Officer (BiVACOR), shares the groundbreaking journey of developing a fully functional artificial heart.
  • Quantum computing in biotech; Philipp Ernst, Vice President of Quantum Solutions & Business Development (PsiQuantum), explores how quantum computing can revolutionise chemistry and drug development.
  • What would it take for medical manufacturing to be part of a future made in Australia; Rebekah Cassidy, AusBiotech Chief Executive Officer leads a panel unpacking Australia’s medical manufacturing.
  • An innovator’s journey: From napkin sketch to first-in-human; Dr Intan Oldakowska, Co-Founder & CEO (Earflo), presents her journey from concept to commercialisation in medtech innovation.
  • AusBiotech’s Early-Stage Innovation Forum (ESIF); Emerging biotech leaders pitch groundbreaking projects to a panel of industry experts, including corporate VCs and early-stage investors.
  • Developing and commercialising companies onshore – executive perspectives from Australia’s long-standing anchors Cochlear & CSL; Dig Howitt, Chief Executive Officer (Cochlear), and Joy Linton, Chief Financial Officer (CSL).
  • The most innovative laboratory in the galaxy; Michael Lopez-Alegria, Chief Astronaut (Axiom Space), shares his experiences performing medical experiments aboard the International Space Station.
  • The lack of female leadership in biotech: How do we change it? Chaired by Dr Anna Lavelle AM, and including Dr Rebecca McQualter, Chief Operating Officer (Chimeric Therapeutics), Gavin Fox-Smith, Chief Executive Officer (Omnigon), Michelle Burke, Non-Executive Director (Cell Therapies & Olivia Newton John Centre), and Bronwyn Le Grice, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director (ANDHealth), explore gender diversity in biotech leadership.
  • Venture into cures: Accelerating treatments through innovative business models; Michael Hund, Global Chief Executive Officer (EB Research Partnership), explains how innovative business models are speeding up the search for cures for rare diseases like Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).
  • Synergy in science: AI, robotics, and quantum in drug discovery; Dr Robert Marino, Chief Executive Officer (Qubit Pharmaceuticals), explores the integration of AI, robotics, and quantum computing to accelerate drug discovery.

There are also two important concurrent Summit's at the AusBiotech 2024 Conference – The AgriBiotech and Biosecurity Summit – in partnership with CSIRO – and the Cell and Gene Summit hosted by Australia’s Cell and Gene Catalyst.

  • AgriBiotech Summit Keynote: The role of biotechnology in protecting Victoria’s agriculture; Dr Simone Warner, Head (Agriculture Victoria Research), explains how biotechnology supports biosecurity efforts in Victoria’s agricultural sector.
  • AgriBiotech Summit Keynote: Animal biotechnology: Post-genome era; Tim Doran, Chief Scientist (OmnisOva), and Dr James Campbell, AusBiotech Chair, and Chief Executive Officer (Patrys), discuss the impact of post-genome technologies on animal biotechnology.
  • Cell and Gene Summit Keynote: Cell and gene therapies: A holistic approach to revolutionising medicine; Abhi Gupta, Senior Vice President & Head of Cell and Gene Therapy (Syneos Health), highlights the critical factors for advancing cell and gene therapies to clinical use.

The AusBiotech 2024 Conference Gala Dinner, sponsored by Merck, is another highlight. This year’s “Life Science in Space” theme explores the fascinating crossroads of space and life sciences microgravity research aboard the International Space Station.
