Government support for a project aiming to integrate key Australian health datasets, including the PBS and MBS, through the latest round of grants under the Cooperative Research Centre Projects initiative.

Industry and innovation minister Arthur Sinodinos announced $28.8 million for 13 projects yesterday.

One project involving Janssen is working to build 'A Big Health Data Analytics and Insights Platform for the Medical Technology and Pharmaceutical Sector'.

The company has partnered with health insights company Prospection and the Centre for Big Data Research in Health at the University of New South Wales.

The objective of the project's commercial analytics platform is to integrate multiple Australian linked health datasets, including PBS and Medicare claims, to investigate health care utilisation and outcomes.

Linking datasets could ultimately make it easier to assess the efficacy of government spending and ultimately improve health outcomes.

The project, which is the first of its kind in Australia and will last two years, has received $1.95 million from government and another $3 million from the project partners.
