Cann Group, a leading developer and supplier of medicinal cannabis in Australia, has announced it will enhance its research and development operations with La Trobe University.

La Trobe Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Keith Nugent, welcomed the expanded collaboration.

“It’s fantastic to welcome another industry leader to our expanding research and innovation precinct on our Melbourne campus,” said Professor Nugent.

“This strengthened collaboration has the potential to provide significant economic benefits, reflecting La Trobe’s key focus on research and innovation, our ambition to help solve some of the big challenges facing our communities and to help grow the economy in Melbourne’s north.

“Importantly, the partnership has the potential to develop a body of evidence that could lead to treatments for a range of medical conditions including the management of chronic pain.”

Cann Group CEO Peter Crock said he believes the deeper relationship with La Trobe will strengthen the company's own capabilities in plant genetics, breeding, cultivation, extraction and analysis, while building a pipeline for clinical trials.

“We see this as a key development in advancing the medicinal cannabis industry in Australia, and most importantly, getting the right products to patients in need.”
