Australian biotech Immuron takes gut health treatment to the US market

Melbourne-based Immuron is preparing to bring its digestive health product PROIBS to American shelves after striking an exclusive distribution deal with Swedish life science company Calmino Group AB.

The agreement marks the next stage of an expanding partnership between the two companies that began when Immuron launched PROIBS in Australia during the 2026 financial year. It now sets its sights on the much larger American market, where the digestive and gut health supplement sector is worth an estimated $4.16 billion according to Mordor Intelligence.

PROIBS is classified as a medical device rather than a drug, designed to ease abdominal pain, bloating and the unpredictable bowel movements that come with both diarrhoea and constipation. Its active ingredient, AVH200, is derived from the plant Aloe barbadensis Mill and works through gel-forming components that support the intestinal mucosal barrier. The product has been sold on Swedish pharmacy shelves for more than a decade and is positioned for long-term use, with what the companies describe as an excellent safety profile and no known interactions with other medications.

Calmino previously commissioned a usability study involving 1,003 participants that found PROIBS helpful for 94 per cent of users, with 91 per cent reporting an improvement in their daily lives and 98 per cent saying they would recommend it to someone else.

Immuron's chief commercial officer, Flavio Palumbo, framed the move as part of a broader strategy to expand the company's digestive health offerings following strong American sales growth of its existing product, Travelan. He said the deal allows Immuron to offer customers a proven premium product backed by science and recommended by physicians and dietitians, adding that the company hopes to improve the daily lives of people affected by these conditions.

Tobias Kisker, chief executive and founder of Calmino Group AB, said the US agreement represents a natural evolution of a relationship that began in Australia and now spans two continents. He said Calmino was proud to deepen its collaboration with Immuron and looked forward to building further on the partnership.
