Feature 1: Clinical trials: The frontier of new treatments, diagnostics and medical devices.

If capital is the life-blood of the biotechnology industry, then clinical trials (CTs) are the heart of the industry.

CTs are a critical component in the development process of bringing new therapies, devices and diagnostics to patients and in monitoring once a product is in use. The primary reason for conducting a CT is to assess safety and efficacy, but they have benefit far beyond in helping develop new treatments, providing early access to experimental treatments.

This feature brings together perspectives from sponsors, clinical research organisations and government, with statistics and latest developments including progress on the path to patients for medical cannabis.

In the past 12 months, after prolonged public debate, the Federal Government and state governments are moving to take the necessary steps to see medical cannabis made available under appropriate circumstances, including commencing clinical trials in three indications for children with epilepsy, terminally ill adults and patients undergoing chemotherapy, and beginning the path of various pieces of legislation to address regulation.

Feature 2: Ag and food biotech in the spotlight as the Agricultural Bioscience International Conference (ABIC) comes to Australia

ABIC 2015 is the premier global meeting linking business, science, and government to promote innovation in bioscience to ensure sustainable food, feed, fibre and fuel security as the climate changes. 16 speakers who will feature at ABIC have provided advance articles.

The theme for ABIC 2015 is ‘New thinking, new discoveries and new applications’. In addition to building on past accomplishments to create a strong and sustainable industry, the program will celebrate innovation in agricultural biotechnology. By connecting people, ABIC gathers not only the common answers but also the different approaches each participant is taking to address the common challenge.

And more

The journal also has regular features, such as the AusBiotech Chair and CEO Report and AusBioSTOCK, an exclusive index of ASX-listed biotech and medtech companies from Baillieu Holst Stockbroking’s Joanna Hill.

The next edition will be published in September 2015, when themes will be:

  • AusBiotech 2015: What’s in store as the industry event of the year returns to Melbourne.
  • Biotech’s role in advanced manufacturing.
